Vic: Man gets seven years jail for son s killing

MELBOURNE, April 20 AAP - A Victorian man who admitted killing his 12-week-old son
who died from head injuries was today jailed for at least seven years.

Brendan Eric Dempsey, 32, who was originally charged with murder, pleaded guilty in
the Victorian Supreme Court to a charge of manslaughter.

The court heard baby Bo-Dylan Dempsey was dead on arrival at Mount Beauty Hospital
in Victoria's north-east on August 12, 1998.

The child also had a broken leg, an injury also caused by Dempsey three or four days
before his death.

In fixing a maximum sentence of nine years, Justice Frank Vincent said it appeared
the child must have been struck "quite savagely".

Dempsey has already served 625 days in custody.

Earlier this year, the child's mother, Kathleen Linda Dempsey, was acquitted by a Supreme
Court jury on a charge of manslaughter.
