Qld;Man stung by jellyfish off north Queensland dies in hospital
A British tourist stung by a jellyfish off the Queensland coast has died in hospital.
The 58-year-old man brushed against the tiny IRUKANDJI stinger while swimming nearHamilton Island in the Whitsundays on Wednesday.
His wife took him to the Hamilton Island Medical Centre, but he lapsed into a comaand was airlifted to Mackay Base Hospital.
A Hamilton Island Resort spokeswoman says the sting aggravated the man's pre-existingheart and blood pressure conditions, bringing on a cerebral hemorrhage.
Police will conduct a post mortem examination.
About 20 people have been treated at the Hamilton Island Medical Centre for Irukandjistings over the past 14 months, and more than 79 people in the Cairns area have been hospitalisedwith stings in the last two months.
The Queensland government has refused to fund antivenene research for the Irukandjijellyfish sting because there have been no recorded deaths until yesterday.
