THE AUSTRALIAN FINANCIAL REVIEW
Page 1: Australia's corporate regulator has launched a civil law suit against current
and former executives of James Hardie Industries over the company's corporate restructuring
in 2001 and its then-attempts to compensate victims of asbestos. Telstra's upbeat forecast
for earnings growth over the remainder of the financial year overshadowed its reported
20 per cent drop after the first six months of operation, pushing its stock price to a
recent high of $4.54.
Page 3: The price of housing in Australia's capital cities rose by an average of just
0.9 per cent in the December quarter with Sydney being the worst performer with an average
fall in price of one per cent.
Page 5: A civil lawsuit launched against James Hardie executives is vital in preventing
other Australian companies from failing to meet its moral and social obligations to compensate
victims of diseases caused by their products.
World (NEW YORK): US Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke has signalled US interest
rates could be on hold for an extended period but he warned that inflation remained the
"predominant" concern for the central bank.
Markets: The Australian share market hit 6000 for the first time, buoyed by good results
form Telstra and ASX Ltd, and strength in the banking sector.
